Suffered an Injury at Work? Here's What You Should Do

If you have had an accident or your health has been affected at work, you may be able to claim compensation. This can extend to pre-existing injuries, illnesses or diseases that have been aggravated by your work.

But whatever the case, there are a few things you must do to protect your interests:

1. Seek immediate medical assistance

Your health is the priority. Immediately after an injury, seek immediate medical assistance and detail to the Doctor exactly what happened. Your Doctor will need to provide you with a workers’ compensation medical certificate if you wish to lodge a claim with WorkCover Queensland.

Seeking treatment is the beginning of the documentation process and this information can sometimes become critical down the track.

2. File a report

Regardless of the severity of any accident or incident, let your supervisor or employer know as soon as possible that you have suffered an injury. Complete an incident report form if one is available or if necessary produce your own report for your employer.

3. Take a photograph if possible

Photographs can sometimes be hugely beneficial should it be necessary for you to make a claim. Taking photographs is easier than ever nowadays with smartphones.

4. Seek expert advice as soon as possible

Time-limits do apply and delays can be fatal for any claim.

While it is never too early to seek legal advice, it is essential that you seek expert legal advice before accepting any offer from WorkCover, or before signing any documentation from your employer or an investigator about the incident.

At Connolly Suthers, we understand that making a workers’ compensation claim can be a daunting and complicated process. We have the expert lawyers that specialise in this area to assist you along the way.
