Mathai (Matt) joined Connolly Suthers in January 2021 after practising in Townsville for two years as a solicitor, at another firm specialising in criminal law. Prior to moving to Townsville, Matt grew up in Blackall in regional Western Queensland. He then moved to Brisbane to complete his secondary education at Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie). Matt has lived in Townsville for nine years and is familiar with the North Queensland region.
Matt holds a Bachelor of Laws from James Cook University and completed his Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice with the Australian College of Law in 2018. He was admitted to practice as a solicitor in May 2018.
Matt comes to Connolly Suthers with considerable experience in criminal litigation ranging from serious criminal charges including murder, manslaughter, drug trafficking, supply, and possession charges, fraud and dishonesty offences, and sexual offences, to traffic/driving and regulatory offences. He has also represented clients before the Crime and Corruption Commission. Matt also regularly appears in specialists’ courts including the Children’s Court, Domestic Violence Court, and The Mental Health Court.
During his practice, Matt has represented clients throughout Queensland, from remote regional towns to all the major cities. Matt understands the difficulties that a client faces when facing a criminal charge and understands the complexities of a client accessing justice and appearing in Court. Matt is a strong and effective advocate who always strives to achieve the best outcome for his clients.
